Meet the Artist: Thomas Arvid

Thomas Arvid possesses an unerring ability to refine a moment. In doing so he captures our wonder and has become an art world phenomenon. Art Business News (May 2003) credits him with “launching a major art trend . . .” with his oversized still life compositions of wine and the rituals surrounding it. Arvid astounds viewers with the intricate details of his images and with his mastery of light, depth, and reflection.

The magic of his painting is in Arvid’s ability to visualize and chronicle an entire scene beyond the frame – to tell a story of enjoyment and the good life – using lush color and adroit composition. Arvid is passionate about art and wine: a collector of both, he strives to capture the pleasure of a life well-lived on each canvas. An Atlanta resident and fresh-faced father of two young sons, the self-taught artist insists that wine should be approachable; his paintings are an embodiment of the casual way that we enjoy wine today. He is an appealing role model for a lifestyle of easy elegance and unpretentious charm.

Arvid’s approach to wine and painting is surprising, given his background as a Detroit native raised to parlay his inherent artistic talent into a secure job in the industrial complex. Instead, Arvid made the leap into pursuing his art as a career, and with the support of his art historian wife and inspiration garnered during a backpacking trip through Europe, he began painting full time.

Drawn to wine by his focus on the color red, Arvid knew he had discovered something when his paintings featuring red wine were being purchased before they were finished. Arvid is awed by the response to his work, “Wine is a great subject because people are familiar with it; they really connect to it. My paintings are really the landscapes between people sharing wine – it’s amazing that my collectors find personal fulfillment in my work, especially when I’m just doing what I love.”

The aura surrounding Arvid’s work is palpable. His international appeal has created such demand that his work is represented by over 50 elite art galleries in the US, Canada, and Japan; collectors are willing to wait years for one of his originals. Influential wineries such as Silver Oak Cellars, Far Niente, and Diamond Creek Winery collect Arvids because he translates the craftsmanship of wine to canvas. Doug Shafer, of Shafer Family Vineyards, likens Arvid’s skill to that of a winemaker, “Arvid’s style is big and bold, with enough selected detail and softness to create a sense of balance . . . this blend of elements is precisely what winemakers hope to bring to their top vintages.”

Today, Thomas Arvid and his wife, Vanessa, head Thomas Arvid Fine Art, Inc., one of the most successful boutique art publishing companies in the country. Founded in 2000, the company distributes Arvid’s limited editions and originals across the country and the world. In 2004 they released a retrospective of Arvid’s work, “Arvid: Redefining the Modern Still Life,” that traces the development of Arvid’s style from its beginnings a decade ago to the lifestyle it is today. The book is a fitting chronicle to illustrate one of Arvid’s favorite phrases, “Life without art is like dinner without wine. Why bother?”

Show continues through November 16th

ART, GLASS & JEWELRY.

Join us for a special MEET THE ARTIST event with Lonni Hopkins.
Friday, October 4th, 4pm-7pm

Our featured jewelry artist, Lonni Hopkins is familiar with the importance of texture. Her beautiful handcrafted jewelry in Sterling silver is meticulously constructed. Each piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork to be treasured.

Lonni has lived a life of art: from lithography and photography in college, to quilting while raising her children, watercolor, sculpture, and many mediums in between. Her endeavor into Metals started circa 1996. Jewelry seemed a natural progression, pulling from past experiences and artistic expressions, culminating with the acute skill and careful craftsmanship that Metalsmithing demands. Her skills were honed with a variety of master teachers including, John Cogswell, Ronda Coryell, Fabrizio Acquafresca, Andy Cooperman, Betty Helen Longhi, Tom McCarthy. Lonni recently retired from teaching Metalsmithing and Jewelry at H.W. Blake High School for the Arts in Tampa.  The majority of her work is Sterling silver, sometimes including 18K Gold, and sometimes a body of work in Argentium silver. The newest body of work is called the “Abstract Rhythm Series” the works are sculptural and textural, using a process of fusing small components of metal that look like abstract paintings by Kandinsky. You’ll see in the new work hollow forms, and shell forms and domed pieces. Expect to see lots of new stones, layers, and coordinating pieces.

“How light dances across the surface of the metal is an important consideration in the designs. Stones provide a sense of color and contrast.” – Lonni Hopkins

Maya Eventov

Maya Eventov offers paintings that seem more like sculptures on canvas. Her use of the pallet knife allows her to build, shape and carve her subjects to life. She was born in 1964 in Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg, under the former Soviet Union. At a very young age her parents introduced her to the great artistic treasures of the city. She spent countless hours at the magnificent Hermitage Museum studying the works of great masters. The works of the Post-impressionists, and those of the Russian Avant-Garde especially fascinated Maya. The palette of Matisse, Gauguin and Renoir affected her interpretation of color, while Rodchenko, Lissitzki and Malevich influenced her sense of balance and composition.

After excelling in art as a child Maya was accepted at the prestigious High School #109 affiliated with the St. Petersburg State Academy of Industrial and Applied Art. She graduated in 1987 with a Masters degree in graphic art and began illustrating children’s books. She took parting creating murals for concert halls in Moscow, Leningrad, Erevan, and Komsomolsk-na-Amure.

Maya immigrated to Canada in 1990 where she now resides with her husband and two children. Her style has evolved during her life in Canada. She loves the rich, bold and bright colors of the Mediterranean and often portrays scenes from her travels in her paintings. Maya developed her unique technique of etching on oil after being inspired by Faberge Eggs that fascinated her as a child when she saw them in the museum.

Andrew Mavin of Axiom Glass lends his strong and experienced  aesthetic as our featured glass artists. His series of thorn vessels and bowls are breathtakingly solid with a delicate curvature, pushing the modern edge. The show also features his mixed media sculpture of glass and stone, which is engaging with its contrast of texture.

Born in 1977 near Detroit, Michigan, Andrew grew up curious with the freedom to explore the outdoors quickly becoming interested in the natural world around him. He displayed a passion for creativity and a clear talent to build. These innate skills developed in his high school metals and jewelry classes, earning him work at a custom jeweler. Soon earning him gold and silver scholastic awards on a national level for his art and designs.

This energy in combination with a scholarship propelled his schooling to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Here Andrew abandon the delicate format of jewelry for the larger scale study of sculpture. However, once exposed to the medium of glass there was no doubt it was the beginning of a life long relationship. “The material holds an excitement I can feel. I see endless possibilities in form, technique, and physical attraction waiting to be discovered.” The fire and soul of hot glass seduced Andrew at once.

Currently, Andrew is producing all of his original glass works to the highest quality and craftsmanship. His limited edition fine craft and fine art sculpture continue to evolve as his techniques flourish and his ideas expand. Installation and custom commission work are available and collected on a national and international level.

Additional artists will include:

Rolland Poska, PT Tiersky, Fay Miller, Patty Roberts, So Young Park, Susan Gott and more.

About this Event

For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate.

Syd Entel Galleries will share a compelling selection of artworks from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection at the 247 Main Street, September 14-September 29. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few.

Additionally, Ted’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself as The Cat Behind the Hat, his cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings and, as a fun aside, many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action. They hinted at his adventures across the world, his reclusive sensibility despite his fame, and his penchant for the childlike fantasy and humor, which infused nearly every facet of his life.

Despite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime, no limited edition artworks were ever conceived, authorized, or created until this historic project began in 1997, six years after Geisel’s death. That year, this exclusive project put into motion a series of artworks and exhibitions, which firmly established him as one of the most iconic artistic talents of the 20th century.

Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate.

In her preface to the popular coffee table book on this collection, The Cat Behind the Hat, Audrey Geisel (Ted Geisel’s widow) writes, “I’m gratified to carry out Ted’s wishes and have these works revealed to the world.” Join us for a fascinating glimpse into the unique artistic vision of Theodor Seuss Geisel!

Alex Sepkus Now Available in Our Online Gallery

Alex describes the intricate detail work in his jewelry as universal with a focus on basic forms, structures and textures. I stopped making sketches years ago, he said. I imagine the piece I want to make in my head, and the hands work by themselves. Sometimes I get surprised at what comes out.

Alex begins with a wax model, which is eventually cast in 18kt gold, or platinum and then hand-finished. “I have no technical secrets,” says Sepkus. “The main trick is in the very intricate manual work that goes into the process. I can explain the process to everybody. But at the same time, I don’t think that I have ever seen a copy of my work somewhere. It is just so labor intensive.” In fact, Sepkus has developed his own specialized tools to achieve the textures that make his pieces so recognizable.

Alex’s jewelry is now available in our online shop. Special Orders also available.
