Jeffrey Ch'ang P'an
Stonington Based, master glassblower, Jeffrey P'an has always been spurred on by his
creative nature and high energy. He has successfully turned Prescient Studios, his
glass blowing studio and gallery into a lucrative venture that is inspiring to collectors,
architects, art enthusiasts and fellow artisans alike.
Originally, Jeff's design aesthetic and skills evolved during time spent blowing glass at a
local glass studio owned by friends. He then gained glassblowing experience and
knowledge by traveling to Italy and studying the Masters at work. He enjoyed
independent study in Murano, Venice and Italy. When he returned home he served as
an apprentice for several years. It was at this point Jeff made the leap of faith to start
his own glass blowing studio.
In October of 1996 Jeff opened Prescient Studios, which is named after a word in the
book "Dune" which means a foreknowledge of events. This is the approach Jeff takes
with all of the pieces he creates. All of Jeff's work begins with a plan, he has a clear
image in his mind before he even begins the process.
From inception, Jeff's vision was to create artful vessels that are beautifully designed
and crafted while continuing to honor old world techniques. This original vision lives
on with all of Jeff's current creations.
Today visitors can view demonstrations by Jeff and his apprentices at Prescient
Studios while interacting with them as they guide them through the creative process
of glass blowing.
"At Prescient Studios I specialize in the design and production of distinctive glass
objects. Respect for the traditions of old world craftsmen combined with modern
design sensibilities allows me to create truly original works of art. I hand make each of
the elements of eveyr design; the canes, murines, blocks, tiles and bands that are
fused to form the core of the vessel. this technique imparts distnictive textures to the
glass that add to the color effects by catching or diffusing the light in ways that are
directly related to the patterns underneath. The texture is a record of how each
piece was made".
