James Nowak
Susan Benjamin Glass Etc. is proud to present the work of James E.
NOWAK. He was born in Washington in 1956 and works and lives there
still today in Seattle. He developed his personal style based on the
maritime Pacific Northwest. He learned how to blow glass with Dale
Chihuly, Flora Benjamin Moore, Richard Royal, Dante Marioni, William
Morris and many others. One of the most influential to him is Dale
Chihuly who allowed Nowak to work with him on one of this winter
glass-blowing teams held in Pilchuck.
A coordinated glass team is like poetry in motion. Like a
well-choreographed dance, each person has his or her part. Nowak's
part is to lead the group, and with their assistance, execute the
piece. Each piece, and all the designs, is personally hand formed by
Nowak. With his signature comes his vision and the lucky owner of the
piece takes a little part of Nowak with him.
COLLECTIONS:
Shells: The creation of these pieces requires the exacting and skilled
knowledge and craftsmanship of the artist. The colors captured within
the layers of each piece create fascinating abstract design.
Vases: Maintaining an abstract expression allows the viewer complete
freedom to draw their own conclusions. Wavy, colored lines transform
from kelp strands to flower stalks.
Nudes: These pieces are created from the Italian technique called
Mussiccio meaning "in the mass". From the sea, Nowak pulls a nostalgic
treasure of statuesque beauty. Headless and armless, they speak and
gesture gracefully.
